This past fall, 15-25 producers sent calves to be fed out at the Colorado State University Eastern Colorado Research Center (ECRC) at Akron. The calves are weighed individually several times during the feeding period and then harvested in late Spring. The producers retain ownership of their calves throughout the feeding period; upon harvest, they’ll receive carcass data and other feed performance information. Producers also receive proceeds from the sale of their calves, less feeding costs. Following the beef show at the Morgan County Fair, the Morgan County Cattlemen’s Association will present an embroidered jacket to the winning producer.
The annual beef feeding contest Calcutta auction is based on the mid-point weights gathered on the cattle. There are some great cattle this year and contest participants can bet on the steer they think will have the greatest net carcass value when the cattle are harvested. Calcutta buyers consider starting weight, average daily gain, genetics and more when making their buying decision. The proceeds of the Calcutta are used to fund agricultural education opportunities and scholarships for students in Morgan and Washington counties.
